Project Description

IMG_0203You’ll usually find me hiding in the back somewhere.

Home Town (City, State): West Jordan, UT

I’ve been a homebrewer since: 2008 – I read an article about homebrewing being legalized in Utah and immediately went out and bought a Mr Beer kit.

Do you have a homebrewing disaster you’d like to share? There are no disasters, only opportunities to find new ways to clean up stuff.

What is your favorite style(s) to brew? American Pale Ale

What style(s) will you never brew? Anything smoked, peated, or with pumpkins.

What was the first beer you ever brewed?  How did it turn out? Mr Beer IPA kit. I’m sure it was oxygenated garbage, but I loved it more than anything I had ever had.

Have you ever had a homebrew mistake that turned out great? I once tried to make an American Amber. My calculations were a bit off, and it came out really dark and roasty. I submitted it to the Beehive Brewoff as an american brown and won my first gold medal.

What is your favorite beer recipe? The next one

Do you have a favorite homebrew trick or gadget that you’ve found to make your beer better/brewing easier, etc? I love my 5-Liter Erlenmeyer flask. Huge starters on a stir plate makes for gooder beer.

Describe your brew system. Red igloo cooler with a braided stainless steel toilet supply line for a mash filter. 15-year old turkey fryer. Woefully inadequate copper immersion chiller. Think ghetto setup and you won’t be too far off.

How frequently do you brew (times/month or /year)? I try for at least once a month, but lately its been less. A lot less.

What is your favorite malt?  Why? Munich. It is yummy.

What is your favorite hop? Why? Simcoe – Its never smelled like cat pee to me

Do you have a favorite or house yeast? What qualities do you like about that yeast? US-05. Stupit easy to use and it ferments like a champ.

What haven’t we asked that you would really like to answer? 8πα

What’s the most unusual ingredient you’ve ever used in a brew? Habanero, I suppose. Not terribly unusual, but it was terribly unpleasant.

How many medals have you won from homebrew competitions? I don’t know… Around 8, I think.

Do you brew alone, with friends or with someone you live with? All alone. Brew time is Paul time.

Are you an indoor or outdoor brewer? Out in the garage. Though I’m in the process of building a brewery in a workshop in my backyard. And by in the process of, I mean I have a vague idea that it would be pretty cool.
